Salon trips for special occassions

Contrary to the rebonded hair epidemic gripping the women of the country for the past 10 years or so, I am still quite happy with my big, monstrous, wildly layered colored hair even if it looks like I borrowed it from Simba and when I wake up it's like I'm Chuckie the doll who rose from the grave. What I lack in excitement, my hair makes up for it. Sure it's not slippery, frizz-free, but it has a lot of character and perks me up.

People are starting to look the same far too long. No offense to those who love their rebonded hair, I have a great number of friends you used to hate their Hermione hair and their confidence has definitely improved after a trip to Going Straight. I am actually a late bloomer, I didn't touch my hair until I got out of my parents' house because I was trying to fit in the "simple girl" club. I wanted something like what the popular girls in school had, which looked very pretty and all the boys wanted to be your boyfriend. So after my first few paychecks, I braved my first foray into the expensive side of the salon menu. I was ecstatic with the results and felt like a thousand bucks, even though I got two thousand bucks poorer.

I think we should finally say goodbye to this fad, explore other options with our hair than conform with shampoo commercials. I think what went wrong here was when Lucy Torres with the "mirror finish 100 brush strokes" hair "captivated" Richard Gomez, everybody started thinking the same? Or when Kim Chiu's hair magically never went out of place even if she was racing a god damn scooter, teenage girls started wanting something like it. Rebonded hair doesn't equate social status anymore. It will not even guarantee you a date with your crush. Everywhere I look, rebonded, rebonded, rebonded. Going Straight still has good business. Even the vendors in divisoria have rebonded hair. You practically look the same everywhere you go, the only thing that changes is the background. The 80's had their fashionable beehives, and now we're showing a completely flat, unmoving and indestructable hairstyle known as rebonded. Or banshee. Or those dolls people use in voodoo.

Rebonded again. Oopsie, this isn't me.

And let me tell you it doesn't look good on everyone. But if you really feel so strongly about your rebonded hair and it makes you feel beautiful, then by all means keep it. It's what your hair is for after all, your crown of glory.

I just want to save all of you from making excuses to your grandkids why everyone had banshee hair and all you can say is, "it was THE hairstyle back in the day, you know." I know I shouldn't make up some twisted psychology about hairstyles but I do believe there's a reason why people choose to wear specific clothes each day, how the color they wear somehow shows what they feel and think of and why they choose to have their hair a certain way. We all have something to say.

Pesteng Pets

We've just begun taking in pets, now that the kids are a bit older and are right about the proper age for an animal companion. You know, someone to grow up with and share memories with. I can recall when as an immature youth I'd go home to a welcoming dog and just give it a good kick just because I felt like it. It's not a moment to be proud of, but it served a good purpose, at the expense of my beloved Spotty. Animal friends helps both children and adults alike to remember that it isn't all about you. Responsibilities and decisions we choose to do or not do affects the lives of others, too. It's a very simple exercise that brings a great amount of balance and peace. I don't believe I'm saying this, but I will go as far as saying it will also prepare you to take on bigger things like keeping a job or having a family. Even necrophiles and murderers experimented with animals first, didn't they? If your pet stays with you a long time, it only shows that you got it together and you're doing just fine in the caring-for-others department.

Now I don't have an ounce in my body that likes anything that is too wild for my taste. Ever since my pet rabbit, Robbie, bit me and left me bleeding profusely plus the tetanus shots endured afterwards, I abandoned all illusions of having cute, non-talking furballs as pets. I wasn't too good in the pampering and baby-ing department too, since all our dogs had "jobs," which was to bark and chase away all scared by-passers on our street day and night, and when the neighbors complained they are tied up to a post in the garage and resume guard duties there. These dogs are often askals, but occasionally we'd have a mean-looking doberman, a cross-dalmatian and some other black or brown scary dog. All the same they are vicious-looking and too big to play barbie with me despite their playful, cheerful personalities. But the service those dogs gave our family is worth much more than cuddling and parlor-bonding. Our dogs never failed to bark whenever our store or our garage got robbed, only we were too slow to respond or were telling the dogs to shut up before actually noticing the problem.

Dogs aren't the only ones we had as pets. Having lived beside the La Mesa Dam, we had 3 monkeys, countless now-included-in-endangered-red-list bayawak or monitor lizards, countless native chicken, 45 day chickens, itik, bibe, goose, goat herd, a giant aquarium with miniature sharks and potbellied goldfishes. At one point, I was friends with the sewer rat (it was the size of a big cat) because I fed it leftover food and handed the food to the critter from my hand to his. How's that for friendship? My brother had matchboxes filled with spiders of varying "value," took care of salagubang shaken from trees until they died from strings or gum wrestling, and dragonflies and other insects. In essence, too many to mention. I am proud to be a Heidi girl who took care of such animals even if they always threatened to kill me.

Last month, I took home a female hamster just because I had no other creative "pasalubong" ideas. The last pet I bought home was a boring dragonfish that refused to eat and had algae in the bowl too easily. I figured that this one hamster had a better life at our house than in a cramped aquarium with 20 other hamsters in the pet store. 1 month later and our Hamtaro has given birth to 10 babies. It's 3:51 and still reading up on "how to care for damned newborn hamsters," and all the information I found so far told of horror stories of how they found dead babies and as far as scooping the poor things and throwing them into the trashcan. I hope that tomorrow when I wake up, everyone's still alive and no one got eaten by their infanticide-prone, depressed and stressed young parents. It would be horrible to find dead hamster babies, or half-eaten rodents that will haunt us in our dreams! Such small creatures require more effort (and worry!) than a giant dog or even a carabao. Loud noises and sunlight are also not allowed because these stress the mommy and will lead to such ugly murder by their own mother! The poor thing is confused, and she knows something is wrong but don't know what is. Incapable of rational thought and operated by instinct alone hence the term "animal" so she will give the lesser evil to her sweet children by eating them instead of them falling to enemy hands. I will need about 15 hrs of animal planet to take this all in. I think we're keeping the initial litter for now. The emotional complications are too much. :)) My husband seemed to know better to tell me to leave the critters alone. Next time, we're separating the girls from the boys in 2 separate, bigger cages filled with wheels and houses and they'll be back to their fun, furry cute selves.

We're still hoping to adopt a little puppy in a few weeks. I hope I don't get as wired as now. These hamsters are seriously getting on my nerves.

Random Moments

Today was a day not like quite any other. I felt like I was in a silent movie. I am trying to figure out why four random events tugged at my chest. It was like I froze for a second like catatonic acting which I hate so much.

This morning, my husband and 1 year old were playing in the bedroom. The little one was trying to bite his nose and they were laughing and hugging and kissing. My husband, usually not the one to show too much emotion, was totally occupied by Mateo, who I believe is the most affectionate little man. Unlike his brothers, who now hates being cuddled by their dad. I froze for a moment, marveled at the guy I married. It dawned on me that he was a perfect dad. And he had the perfect love a father could give a child. I thought, my sons are so loved by their dad. I couldn't help but thank God for the gift of having a loving father for my children.

I went about my afternoon and headed to the market to re-stock on vegetables. While on queue to buy snacks from a popular eatery, I was approached by a slow-moving old lady who was begging for some money. She kept on poking me, making "kalabit" and I am a little privy to touch by people I don't really know. You can talk to me, just don't touch me. So it set me a bit off. I moved a few steps back, I bet it appeared like I was disgusted. Like I was revolted by germs or flying cockroach of something. I don't know if I'm only imagining things but when she looked at me, boy did she look like she was hurt and rejected.

When I got back to my seat, I was stunned-- stunned at my behavior. I felt ashamed and ungrateful. Beggars are human beings, I am not above them and they are not lesser of me. My everyday troubles are nothing, nothing compared to what they have to put up with life everyday just to survive. On a normal day, I would have invited this person to join me, buy her a nice bowl of goto and a cola. I would have asked how her day was and where she lives. I have asked many beggars to share my meals, even let some street children come into my home for supper after getting the "kalakal" I set aside for them every week. I busied myself with helping my firstborn mix his palabok. I told him, "Don't talk to strangers, honey."

Then it dawned on me. I am losing my faith in people. I am learning not to be too trusting. This is a good thing, right? I got nothing to watch my back but me. If you got kids in toll, you can't be too careful. I've been scammed twice this month all while with family members present and I wouldn't risk safety over a few hundred pesos. But this event with the market Lola put things in perspective. It wouldn't hurt to strike a balance, not everyone out there is as bad as I think.

On the jeep on the way back, I sat beside two women having a conversation loud enough for the half the vehicle to hear. The other admitted to her friend that she couldn't keep a straight lie to her husband, and how her recent sins are causing problems in her home. The rest I didn't catch since it's really none of my business. After they changed the subject, I took a glance at them. Both of them, including the unfaithful wife, were well-dressed and bejeweled, looked like working women, in their mid-30s and were rather attractive. I thought, how much of yourself would you have to trade to have a happy home? What would you have to give up? She was a made woman, and she certainly looks like she didn't let herself go. Yet why is she unhappy? The eureka moment was, I am TRYING my best. I pray to God everyday to help me do my best. I drag myself day to day and force myself to the most mundane of tasks and He helps me hold the fort. For my marriage and my children. Sure I had to sacrifice a few things, but it will have its time. For now, I must learn. Even if it takes me years to do it. I am learning to love myself. I thanked God again for taking care of everything.

While at the parking lot of the village grocery, there was a really romantic scene where this guy in his 30s surprises a bouquet of stargazers-- my favorite flower-- to his lady. They must be having a little celebration. It wasn't entirely private but there weren't too many people around, she put her arms around him and kissed him on the lips. She looked sincerely happy and she loved the flowers. She gave the guy something in two little boxes, he didn't look as thrilled but made a likewise gesture to the girl. They got in the nice new black car, I saw the car start, but they didn't leave just yet. They just stayed there. My eureka moment was, how nice it would be for any girl to have a man who makes life comfortable. And not a living hell. One who takes pains to remember an anniversary or even the silly monthsaries. Or flowers, just because there's no occassion. One who acts respectful towards a girl, hold out the door for her and all those silly people hardly do anymore. And I love it when a man prepares himself to have a life with her, including housing her, giving her vacations, cars, providing for his future family. Not just have a girlfriend because he's of that age when he's supposed to have a girlfriend or he's a total loser. Or has a girlfriend because it feels strange not to have one. A woman is not for your convenience only. She is your partner for life. And she needs just as much affirmation that you love her just as much as you need sex everyday. (And the same goes for gays and lesbians.)

For all the things that happened today, I'm glad.

Seeing the highly Hispanic and Moro heritage and tradition of the province will be a truly memorable trip, something I will never forget.

It would be a dream come true to come to Zamboanga, and I would like to share this colorful and fun-filled experience with my favorite travel buddy, my husband, E. We have always been travel enthusiasts, and have never been to Mindanao. This will be an awesome treat for his 30th birthday.

Counting the Days

The last time I counted the days was when I was pregnant with Matt. Now, my feet are itching to hit the beach and I find the days go by like, turtle-slow. I am counting the days when I and hubby will be on our scheduled "Just-You-And-Me" time. You know, just a couple of days each year to be with each other to make up for late and weekend work nights. And because we need it. (I think all couples should have it. No matter how long you've been together, there's still a lot to discover about one another.) Now I will save myself from whining about the late nights and weekends he's out on business call. And now I'm worried that this trip won't push through because he's been whining for weeks about that Gulliver of a LED TV that he likes.

Despite our busy schedules, we somehow manage to find a little time for each other. In fact, we stick to a 40-hour couple time a week. My husband is an absolute superman for being able to pull it off. He would be the one to get me off my lazy ass to our shopping dates, midweek grocery trips and like today, despite being on the night shift, he volunteered to come with me to do some errands.

Let's count some more.

My mommy friend and supermom Janice Villanueva of Mommy Mundo will hold this fun walk/run in celebration of World Breastfeeding Month at Bonifacio Global City on Aug 14. Now on its 5th year! This is super fun, so many kids, toddlers and babies, walking, in a sling, crawling, cradled, cuddled, with a stroller, running in circles... you can do this run in so many ways! This is a great way to bond with the family over the weekend while introducing your kids to fitness and exercise.

It is an event that welcomes moms and expectant moms, babies and kids, daddies, and run enthusiasts to run (or walk) 5k/3k distance all in support for the cause of breastfeeding.

This year's Mommy Milkshake starts off at 530am assembly time, and after the run, families are invited for a morning snack at Mercato Centrale@BGC to attend the breastfeeding expo on that day. When at the beach...

Since we're going to Boracay, I am suddenly reminded of how things are now in Bora. We keep coming back for the beautiful beach, for the parties. But the trash drives me crazy. With that many shops on such a small strip of land, the rate at how fast the trash keeps piling up drives me crazy. You can just imagine how many fruit shake cups, styrofoam disposables, plastic packaging makes it to the island's dumpsite (they have a dumpsite, in the island, no less). And the sewage problem has been a concern for so many. There is just no way a small island can keep it together for long without a well-designed sewage system.

I can still remember how Boracay used to be from my childhood. And my teens. I miss that Boracay. I have been to better beaches but I still come back to Boracay for the memories. Beach fun used to be bringing your own food, setting up a beach mat and picnic. When at ANY beach, at any rate, buy your food at the market and cook your own, use reusable utensils or go cowboy with banana leaves as plates and your hands instead of the usual spoon and fork. You're not at a fine-dine, for chrissake. Or wake up at dawn to catch the fisherman with the day's haul. Don't bring the junk you eat when at Manila like chips, instant noodles, hotdogs and sweets. Give your sodium-laden diet a break and buy from local sellers and help the community's economy. When at the beach, take advantage of what you'll find there.

When at the beach... keep it simple. And sweet. And green!

Total Bird Madness

PS. My 3-year-old can finish not one, not two, but multiple levels of the damn game. Tsk. Tsk. Plants Vs. Zombies was our old obsession, then Angry Birds came along. At the rate they update Angry Birds I don't see my son's addiction ending anytime soon. LOL

My Kids Want To Watch Varekai in Manila!

I showed my kids videos of world-renowned performing circus, Cirque du Soleil, currently performing "Varekai" live in Manila. First thing Miguel said was, "Wow!" while Marco said, "Is it real, mommy?" I said, "Yes, son, it is real. It's a circus show!" "Woah. Can we go watch, mom?" I said, "Sure, we will!" I would hate to break their hearts.

So when HOOPLA, INC announced that they're giving away tickets, I grabbed on the chance to let the kids experience the best circus in the world. Here are Miguel and Marco, working their way hard for their tickets. You can't imagine how game they were to pose. In their young minds, they really thought this was for the circus people they saw online. And yes, they colored these! (Until they started complaining that their hands were beginning to hurt from all the coloring so I finished what they couldn't.)

First Day Funk

The boys attended summer class. But I guess nothing really could prepare them for the actual one. One week into school and I can't tell for sure if my boys like it. They still cling on to my skirt and resist coming into class. Earlier this evening, my 4 year old kindergarten son was exasperated with his homework and is giving up before he even started. Homework was drawing the simplest of the simplest slanted and horizontal lines but he was acting up a bit. I had to bribe so he'd finish it. Earlier today he refused to be left in school when in the first week, we had no problem. His teary pleas to not be left behind went into a full-scale crying bout.

Marco: "Mommy, I don't want to go to school anymore."
Me: "Well, if you don't want to go to school, si Mommy na lang magtuturo sa yo, sige ka."
Marco: "Ikaw na lang magturo sa kin, Mommy. Ayaw ko sa school."

Would you even believe that. He's actually volunteering himself for homeschool. Yeah, right.

And the little one, Matt, is left with zero playmates when his brothers are at school. I can't tell if he's glad or he's sad cos he finally, is at peace.

Fiesta!

It was fiesta when we visited my folks' place at Fairview. I took the opportunity to let the kids experience true-blue "peryahan," or a small barangay carnival, I really don't have an English word for it. :p I have great memories of the cheap thrills that comes along with going to "peryas." Back in the day, bets for "hulog-barya" or that game where you throw coins that must fit in squares on a board to win prizes was only 25 cents. Pellet gun stalls went for just P5 per magazine of 12. Now, it's P15. Rides cost only 10php. I was surprised ride tickets were sold at only P20. I haven't been in a carnival since college and that was when Pasiklab 2000 was still in Philcoa and we'd drop by after rehearsals from Dulaang UP.

Persian Kabab

Throwing all dieting sensibilities aside, here am I and my gayest bestfriend, Carlo, at my favorite Persian food diner, Persian Kabab at Pioneer Street, Mandaluyong. It is seriously the cheapest Persian restaurant in existence. Even cheaper than on-the-go shawarma food stalls. You see, I have a love-hate relationship with Persian food. I enjoy eating it but after that I just want to barf it all out. Whatever things they put in there doesn't sit well with my stomach. I don't know if it's the spice or the yogurt shake or the garlic mayonnaise. The ONLY shawarma that doesn't hurt me is Tri-Mo Shawarma at Lagro, Quezon City but that one isn't even authentic. It's more Filipino. We had the place to ourselves. The server was super sleepy and assumed sleeping mode position on the sofa inside the restaurant, but she was fun. Can't blame her, we were the only customers, this day being a Monday dawn.

After all the beef, ox brains, hummus and spicy mayo that we had, we knew that we needed something else to hold down the acids gurgling in our tummies. We went straight to McDonalds and had some hot chocolate and ~~more acid~~ fries.

Before Starbucks officially banned smoking yesterday, me and my friend Carlo decided to commemorate all our Starbucks smoking days with a last hurrah! I no longer smoke, having kids make you stop all sorts of vices. (Well, I just turned to food. Bah.) Starbucks you are awesome because I literally pour all my stresses and negative energies on your establishments. You are a great shock absorber and you even award me with free frappucinos (got customer voice receipts hehe) and you never fail to send me home feeling so much better. You are five minutes from where I live, seriously, if I had a better friend of a restaurant, it's you.

No other cartoon company has been a part of my childhood as much as Disney has. Countless days and nights I have spent imagining I was a Princess Belle, Jasmine and Ariel wishing for that one day I will meet my true prince, talk to animals and belt like an opera singer. (Hah!) To this day I can sing Disney songs by heart and all the lyrics are pretty much encrypted in my brain. I imagined escaping to a world where I lived in a castle and wish upon a lamp, and a blue genie will grant everyone of my wishes, like owning a mall, and have pretty much everything I saw on TV from toys to cars. LOL. Such wild dreams were very much a part of my childhood. Back in the day when things were simpler, there was a very fine line between reality and the magical world of Disney.

Now I'm a fully grown adult and a mom to little people like how I was once was, I learned that we should never stop dreaming. This is what makes Disney so unique, a spark of dreams, family-friendly themes, history lessons and good values in a brand that has sought out generations and generations. My kids are not immune to loving Mickey and Friends, their preferred channel over other cartoon channels is still Playhouse Disney. I remember watching Disney on Ice from a time not too long ago. When I was still in high school, I won A LOT of slogan contests. Whether I don't have much competition or am I truly talented, or the stars aligned just for me, my winning streak remains a mystery. But what I do know is I always liked winning some extra cash or in the absence of cash, bragging rights.

Apparently, my knack for slogans is still an existing part of me. Circque du Soleil's Varekai in Manila!

They say you should see Cirque du Soleil at least once in your lifetime.

The touring arm of the world-renowned Cirque brings one of its best productions to Manila, Varekai. Varekai has been touring for the past nine years in North America, Australia and Europe and this is the first time they're performing in Asia.

A short synopsis from Everything In Budget reads:

Varekai is a Cirque du Soleil touring production that premiered in Montréal in April 2002. Its title means "wherever" in the Romani language, and the show is an "acrobatic tribute to the nomadic soul". The plot is based loosely on the Greek myth of Icarus, who melts his wings after flying too close to the sun. Rather than drowning in the sea below him, in Varekai Icarus lands inside a lush forest, in which the creatures teach him how to fly again.

The Varekai troupe consists of 56 performers, of which there are a few principal characters. Varekai's acts comprise many acrobatic talents, ranging from aerial arts to Russian swing, among others.

“What I love about ‘Varekai’ is that it was always meant to be a celebration of life,” Cirque du Soleil's Artistic Director for Varekai Matheiu Gatien shares. “From the beginning of the show, all the cast is onstage, and we really kick it off with incredibly beautiful music… very explosive. In times that are a bit difficult, economically and for different reasons, we need to give people a place to dream and to escape… and to just appreciate something that’s just beautiful.”

And because the show is so intricate, and without time to train local workers or even artists, Gatien admits they could only hire local front-of-house staff (ushers) as well as food and beverage people for each stop, like they would in Manila. “It’s more… [for] welcoming of the people. We trust the local people to know how to operate, how to speak to them, to make them really welcome in our big top,” he notes, but also adds, “The follow spot operator, we hire one every city, as a gesture.”

The LGBT community is an ever-growing community in Manila. The lesbian scene in Manila is seen to gain more and more popularity and hold activities that foster camaraderie and a sense of community. Aside from spreading awareness about gay rights and equality, they hold several activities promoting the the creative spark among its members. Recently, The 1st All-Female Amateur Photography Contest was launched for females, both straight and lesbians, pursuing a passion for photography. The announcement of the grand winner will be held on July 2, 2011 at 360 Bar, A.Venue, Makati City.

Manila Full Lunar Eclipse of June 16th

For what it's worth, I took photos of the incredibly fascinating full lunar eclipse this morning. The sky was clear with little clouds, the moon was full, very bright. It was soooo beautiful! I did not plan to go out but glad I did. I haven't sky-grazed in a while. :)

Now, these are totally pathetic, lame, my point and shoot camera took and the moon looked like a sad pen light. Here was the moon shining and twinkling and turning into a Transformers movie and I wished I had a better camera. But I cannot resist taking souvenir photos of myself witnessing this awesomeness. Wait, does wishing on eclipses instead of shooting stars count too? :-) (I still love my Panasonic LX5 though, this is still the BEST PARTY CAMERA ever. How people manage to get drunk in parties and go home with DSLRs in one piece is beyond my understanding. Right, Ton?)

I brought the kids out on a play date at The Grove this weekend. They were having the second "How to Plan Your Own Kiddie Party" shebang and I could not resist coming over. Since hubby won last year's grand prize, it was a fun to reminisce the whole thing. It was also great to update myself on new and exciting suppliers and party concepts in the city. I have three kids, and a hubby turning 30, after all!

Anyhow, the tots was more excited about the playground and meeting new playmates! I bought the kids some nachos, sausages and drinks, and they were more than happy to let me lounge and go around and skim through the numerous suppliers sporting their wares. I was even happy to see a familiar face from my college days. :)

Then I messed with the camera settings hence the washed-out effect. I can never get this camera right. Seesh.

Quarter Life Crisis Manifesto

When I was younger, I thought I would have figured everything out by 25. I thought 25 was OLD. I envisioned myself being the best that I could be, without fears and insecurities. And now that I am 25, indeed in my quarter-life, it feels like I am only at the beginning of this big roller coaster ride, and I begin to wonder where I'll be in a year or two. It's only been a few years since I entered "the real world" and I sometimes worry if I can handle all the stresses and uncertainties a person is required of to "grow up." This transition to adulthood brings up a lot of anxieties, like financial independence, choosing a career, starting a family and aging!

In this process of discovering myself, I am beginning to understand what I want and do not want. I learned to embrace change, and to take this as a time of opportunity of adventure and exploration. I may have a lot of down days, but I'll take heart and treat this as a part of growing up. To put my best foot forward, I will make sure that I put out my best self and inspire positivity and build my life step by step. A lot of exciting things happen everyday, and I have no choice but to move forward or stay where I am.

My appearance has also started to change, my first gray hairs, putting on a lot of extra weight, lines and crow's eyes, rough skin texture, sagging skin, dullness, open pores, dry skin and age spots! These can hamper my confidence.

Together with a happier disposition, healthy living and self-enrichment, I am less insecure, and I feel like I can take on any challenge that gets my way. I feel less in a rush and I lea rn to enjoy each day. I know that I still have long years ahead, and I pray that I can take on the challenges that will come to me someday.

I am currently battling with obesity and it is not an easy journey. I'm afraid that with the pounds I melt away, my skin will become really saggy, especially in the face, neck, tummy and arm areas. I am not wishing for supermodel-firm skin. I just want to improve what I already have. Do you have any suggestions for me?

My Favorite Workplace: Eastwood City

Two years ago, I worked in CyberOne Plaza, one of Megaworld's buildings in Eastwood City. I loved working there because Eastwood is such a splendid place to go to everyday. I loved that the office had a mall downstairs, and before going to work I can visit clothing shops, go to the bookstore, check out new gadgets and appliances or just lounge in a coffee shop. Going to work wasn't a drag because there's always something new to see everyday.

Walking distance from the office were dozens of food stops and retail shops nicely rowed in Eastwood Mall.

From time to time, these Johnny Rockets folks would do a retro song and dance number.

Sure, I love Boracay forever.
But this is special. The sand is a rare white-pink. And it's fronting the Philippine Sea.

I hereby elect myself as Mayor of this awesome, unbelievable, lovely paradise island in Foursquare--- only there's no internet.

I will wholeheartedly adopt hermit crabs and sea cucumbers. As pets.

I can parade my tits and not worry if somebody will see me

I will gladly welcome my friends and their families.

I will not litter

I will rake the sand for free

I will overcome my fear of sea snakes for you

Right now, I'm trying out this thing called vegetarianism. :p I find it hard to believe myself. So making this post from a trip to Tagaytay is a very self-defeating, agonizing thing to do, and makes me wanna abandon ship and go back to all the good stuff. Bloody hell.

ToyTown Sale at Robinson's Galleria Atrium

When I went to the mall last night, my original plan was to shop for clothes for myself. As you know, it is a rare treat to just go out and have a little time for myself and to focus on doing just that. But old habits just don't die easy and before I knew it, I'm already checking out stuff from the toy store. And when it comes to my kids, I do not hold back. Haha.

Robinson's Galleria's ToyTown has an awesome toy sale going on at the Mall Atrium. We are huge fans of Tonka, really sturdy and adorable little toys for boys. We bought several trucks and bulldozers over the years and it has not seen a dent, scratch or broken parts from all the rough play they got from my three boys. It can stand serious abuse, kids can actually ride it and it will not break!

Imagine my joy to see the big red Playskool Firetruck Chuck at only P100 (reg price P899), these small racing chucks for P200 (reg price 900). The one at the leftmost corner is a six month old Chuck, bought at P700 at ToyTown Shangrila. The spin is that the boxes are dented and damaged, but the contents are relatively untouched. There were items worth P2,000 which sell for only P500. Unfortunately those are beyond my kid's ages.

This Monopoly board sells originally at P1,399. Guess for how much I snatched this loot.

Hair questions

I just found this photo from '08 while vacationing in Baguio. This was the first time I had my hair colored, and the dye used was mahogany brown. Prior to this I did not have any white hair. When the roots started to grow back, white hair sprouted like unwanted fungi. It was horrible. Which reminds me to get my tresses colored again.

Any hair color suggestions? Where can I get a decent hair color without breaking the bank? I have thought about coloring on my own, but still horrified that I might turn my hair into something worthy of Star City horror house ride. Sowee, I'm cheap that way. :D Yeah, most probably I'll make a trip to the salon soon.

Pamarta Bali at Morong, Bataan

Every summer, my friends and I make it a point to go to a destination we haven't tried yet. This year, we decided on something a little bit closer to home since everybody has been to or has a booked trip to more popular places like Boracay, Palawan, Bohol, Camsur, Sorsogon, Baguio, Subic, etc. Nica saw this resort online and thought we'd give it a try. It is, after all, famous for attracting thousands of turtles to lay their eggs here, of all places!

To get here, ride an Olangapo-bound Victory Bus and take Morong Gate. A scenic 45-minute ride through SBMA and places like Anvaya Cove will take you to Morong, Bataan.

Pamarta Bali is a small yet well-maintained and beautifully kept resort. They have a very attentive, courteous staff which responds within a minute to guest demands, an alert lifeguard and security guards and some groovy beach sounds installed all over the place. It is very clean. Entrance fee is P300, and cottages are Php1,300 for small nipa huts, P1,800 for big nipa huts, P1,000 for open cottages and P400 for tent areas.

The only downer was that there were no air-conditioned rooms, which is kind of a must for me. I always look for that cool comfort of a full-blast aircon after a day of soaking in the sun and seawater. Well, on second thought, in the end it didn't matter cos we got drunk and passed out the moment we hit the sack, so sleeping concerns melted into obscurity.

They also do not have a resort restaurant. It's either you ask the nice lady at the neighboring resort to cook something up or bring your own food. We cooked all our meals and bought ingredients at the nearby Morong Public Market, a tricycle ride away. Pamarta Bali is equipped with cooking utensils, stoves, grills and freezers, so storing and preparing food is not a problem. They were kind enough to even lend us their plates when we ran out of paper plates.

This infinity pool is clean, and it doesn't hurt to open your eyes while swimming in it, unlike other pools where you get shocked by all the chlorine and germs!

Turtles love this beach

Compared to the bigger resorts, I liked the privacy and security of Pamarta Bali. There's no overcrowding and there's ample space to just chill, relax and swim.

Here we are at the "white beach." We can see the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant from here. For some reason, I couldn't find my photos of it! Sayang. It was a highlight of the day for me.

After that, we headed to the Pawikan Sanctuary in Pawikan Beach. I thoroughly enjoyed this eco-conservation visit, I have never gotten so close to pawikans of substantial size, and more so, touch them! I loved the Philippine seaturtle. Trivia: Illegal possession of pawikans warrants a 12-year prison sentence. P20 entrance fee

Beach Intervention

I found myself to be the center of criticism at a recent beach trip with a bunch of my friends. They were very concerned with my weight gain. They have been with me from my growing up years, my adolescence, my young adult life and my mid-20s, first-hand witnesses to how I evolved from a 135 pound 19 year old, to a 220 lbs pregnant woman, and finally a 210lbs postpartum body. Being the true friends that they are, they were not afraid speak their minds even if it meant hurting my feelings. They didn't baby me or let me bask in the comfort of lies.

My family is not exempt to this. My parents know I thrive in intense physical activities. I am admittedly, a hyperactive kid who needed constant stimulation and an outlet to vent out all this pent up energy. I had a lot of sports--- swimming, softball, bowling and tennis. (But I loathed every minute of doing house chores because it bored the death out of me.) My parents told me that my size is going well out of proportions and I needed to do something before my husband leaves me for another woman.

Truth be told, I have a lot of things going on in my head that prettifying is not one of my urgent priorities. I used to live in a world where missing salon appointments is a crime and I can shop at my own pace and carefully select my wardrobe with attention to the teeniest detail. In this world I had all the time to sit in front of a mirror and immerse in vanity. I can take long, leisurely baths everyday and I can just go out whenever I feel like it to watch a movie or go to a park to have unlimited "me" time.

My current reality is a far cry from this. Baths are 10 minutes TOPS. After breakfast, I shove the kids to the bath and I sneak my own when they're done soaking up my clothes with water. After that, I spend an hour in the kitchen to cook, an hour and a half to just feed three children simultaneously. Ten to twenty minutes to feed myself and finish everything before one of my children cries or fights or whatever menace they can make up. Then I clean up the house with toys all over the stairs, in the bedroom, in the living room and try to tidy up the house. When they finally settle down and take their afternoon nap only then can I face the scrubbing and washing of a mountain-load of pots, pans, plates, feeding bottles and clean the mess on, under and around the table and chairs in our dining room. Before I know it, one of them is already awake and will be asking for a milk bottle and this wake-up time in itself is already a signal for me to cook the afternoon snacks. When snack time is done, I clean up after the mess again and wash the plates and pans. Then, I take out the meat for defrosting in preparation for dinner. I spend the entire day working in front of the kitchen. There are times when I don't want to get up anymore and just wanted to sleep out the miserable feeling of being in front and around food all the time.

So, my friends went on an on about how I should hit the gym, do aerobics, get glutathione injections, slather lotions, do150 sit-ups a day, pluck my eyebrows, dress better... They poured every suggestion they can think of. Bottomline is they think I'm ugly and I need improvement. I love my friends and I have gone past getting hurt by my insecurities.

The curious thing is, I wasn't at all affected by the ridicule and criticism. I wasn't impressed because I have a different perception of what deserves to be branded as beautiful. But in that conversation, what stunned me is how I constantly found myself giving unending, ridiculous excuses as to why I am fat.

Here am I, a truly functioning human being but all people can see is the multiple layers of tires around my waist and my big fat arms. I felt challenged.

What we mostly see on TV is the exciting, controversial, on-the-edge life of famous people. In truth, most of us live routine, ordinary lives. Do the usual, regular preoccupations. Enjoy momentary thrills of movie dates and reunions. We find comfort and security in such regularity. A simple, peaceful way of life. Yet deep down, we have that nagging feeling of dissatisfaction, a hunger to find the full extent of our capabilities. A desire to do something good. Or greater. Over time, we find ourselves thinking if we should be doing more. Then, reality kicks in and we got bills and mortgages to pay, we have sales quotas to fill, deadlines to meet, and a trillion other trivial things. You go about your work while imagining yourself to be floating in some random beach in the Philippines with emerald green waters and glistening, white sand. You power-dress when all your feet really want is a comfortable pair of flip flops. You eat a greasy takeaway when you wish you were having grilled seafood with eggplant and salted egg on the side. Yet you go on and on in doing it because that's what you set out in life for. To do something acceptable, meaningful and rewarding-- financially and in other ways. It's what will make your parents confident and proud about you. We feel safe planting seeds here and there, waiting for that bountiful harvest one day. These sacrifices is what will assure you that you can live comfortably till you're about 60. And when you're 60, when all the children have left, or you say goodbye to your job-- you'll finally get that grand vacation. But you have to do it with arthritis, hypertension or diabetes. But first, pray that you make it to 60. It is indeed trivial. But don't let all your decisions hinge on your quest for money.

This is why I encourage all of you (myself included) to pursue our passions. Never mind that it doesn't earn anything. You need to find what you love doing. Never mind that you don't take away any practical application. If you want to read for the rest of your life, do so. It's what will make you, YOU. If you like to fish, then fish. If it is what excites you. If you like to spend hours and hours on band sessions knowing your chances of fame and fortune is small, damn right do it. You got to keep your creative juices flowing. Just remember that any successful person follows his dreams and conquests responsibly. To live a well-rounded life, is to create balance, and not selfishly contain yourself to one thing, but rather generously give everyone a portion of the pie.

Now, the money part. There's gotta be a better way to have it than rob banks and wish on Chinese money trees, isn't there? Suggestions are welcome.

A Blessed Holy Week

Sorry for the momentary lack of posts in this blog, the holy week is certainly the most anticipated for most folks and families--- mine not excluded. The holy week takes on different forms --- whether to contemplate, fulfill a "panata," or devotion, pilgrim, or take the opportunity to spend more time with family or friends, reunions and out of town beach trips. Whatever you do and wherever you are this holy week, take time to pray and thank God for the gift of life and his sacrifice for humankind. I am spending the holy week at home. Exciting? Not. But wouldn't trade it for the world.

Hit Summer Adventure for Kids at Shangri-La

One of the great things about having kids is you totally get to relive your childhood. I picked this line up from Muhammad Ali, "Children want to make you start your life over." What this means for me is you get to re-experience the wonders and excitement of childhood through the eyes of your child. When I bring my kids to "congregate" with other kids and see their favorite characters, they tend to open up more. Miguel is particularly shy and not too trusting. Marco as well, but he can communicate his feelings better and we can talk about trust now that he's a wee bit older. Mateo has zero shyness level at this point. Children encourage adults to tap in their spontaneity and joy of un-self-conscious, childlike creativity.

Shangri-La Plaza opened today an event called Hit Summer Adventure which runs up to April 17, Sunday. Event sponsors had different activities for kids for free like face painting by Popitas, pizza and bread making by Breville, drawing and coloring by Maped and Elmer's Glue, Thomas and Friends story telling and drawing, free Ceelin Vitamin C supplement from Unilab, Shakey's free balloon creations and discounted DVDs from Magnavision. Honestly, Miguel didn't care about anything because he was obsessing about this gigantic Thomas and Friends train tracks. Anak, when we become millionaires, and we have a house which can fit toys this size, okay? :)

I think everyone should have scheduled mid-week activities. Just to make things more interesting and spice up the mundane Monday to Friday routine. Making an effort to do something out of the ordinary makes one feel like getting a special treat. Other people make badminton dates after office, a yoga class, a Tuesday movie night, pursue a day-to-day photography habit or a Monday ladies' brunch. Fridays are usually reserved for office affairs, it's almost obligatory. But scheduling action on an ordinary weekday will be sure to perk up the rest of your week.

Since we just love hanging out and talking endlessly, it's dinner by default. It's not healthy, hahaha! But it does the job. Yesterday it was a Wednesday stress buster dinner with friends at Crocodile Grill in Shangrila Plaza. We also made plans to try out a Bataan beach resort on May.

Imagine being thrown in a pit filled with cobras, in your plain clothes, with no defense whatsoever but a broomstick. Think about a hundred cobras preparing to strike at you, all at the same time. Well someone's worst nightmare is someone else's tea time.

Apparently, a cobra-ninja does exist. He can toss cobras without a twitch on the eye. He does not feel fear in the face of a venomous 15-minute death. His reflexes beats that of Michael Johnson. He can chat with a friend while cleaning cobra poo and eggs. And I am sure there are other cobra-ninjas where he came from.

Sunday at The Fort

Hubby's job requires him to be "on-call," he needs to be there en pronto. As a matter of fact, he's very dedicated to his work. In our years of marriage, I have seen him wake up in the middle of the night to answer office calls and groggily drag himself in front of the computer. And not return to bed, until the trouble is fixed. He is the most dedicated systems administrator that I know. I think he won't be taking a Holy Week break, but would have his Lenten off on a different schedule.

So this Sunday, he was called into office early in the morning. He asked me to follow course so that we can still spend our weekend special time together. We follow this 40-hour-a-week couple time. Hehehe.

We had a late breakfast and took a stroll. Miggy gamely smiled at the camera. He's such a pro!

Willie Revillame's Full Meltdown

I don't really watch TV but had the cable subscription back on after 3 years of no TV, for the enjoyment of my mother-in-law. Our kids have limited TV time.

I must confess. Sometimes, I watch Willing Willie. I enjoy the cheesiness. I hate the lipsynching. It's thrilling to watch people win big, like a fully furnished house and lot a house helper would otherwise be impossible to procure ever by his salary alone.

But I do know that, despite the superficial, colorful carnival is a conscious knowledge that the show is so wrong in so many places. Behind the corny jokes and the laughter is a frightening truth of how Willie Revillame's show damages the psych of so many people. At the end of every show I feel sorry for my kababayans who resort to fall in line for days just to have some money. I cannot begin to enumerate how wrong it is in so many places. I have seen Willie boast an audience share as high as 60% (and that's a lot) on a Saturday.

In this video, he practically enumerated all the bad things that happened in his show.

1. Ultra stampede, 71 dead (hands down, worst-- ever)

2. Wilyonaryo cheating issue - and war with Joey de Leon

3. Cory Aquino's procession simulcast with his Giling-giling portion
4. He wanted Jobert Sucaldito fired

5. Lawsuit hayday
6. Jan Jan

And he melts down. It never stops. Too much pointing fingers, too many excuses and ridiculous comparisons. Prepare to cringe.

If ever he decides not to return after his two-week leave of absence, I would like to think that something good has come out of this whole controversy. Poverty porn will not in any way help us as a country. Even if the masa loves him, at the end of the day, it will just further ingrain a culture of cheap sensationalism and living on false hopes. Most, if not all, need not cry in national TV while telling how sorry one's life is in exchange for what, P2,000? P5,000? Where's national pride in that? All the prizes: the houses, the cars, the millions cost very little compared to what the show earns from their sponsors--- is just a band-aid fix to our real problem as a nation. He has a very big influence on how his masa audience thinks, and that alone is the greatest damage of all. Gyrating on TV has become a socially acceptable practice accessible even to young children, especially on a primetime slot.

And I think singling out the celebs he mentioned was below the belt-- especially LEA SALONGA. A LEGEND CANNOT BE A HAS-BEEN. She's known for being very privy to her personal space but the honor she brought our country and put the Philippines at par with the world when it comes to performing has inspired many Filipinos to dream and believe at what we can achieve. Deeds like this matter, not giving alms which only lasts a day.

And Aiza. So he's challenging her to man up? And Agot too. Is it like her fault if she cannot have a baby? That's beyond foul, man.They do have a right to make a stand. He's so full of himself, he lives in own little world where he is king, he's like a spoiled brat who goes off when things aren't played by his rules. He said he's never "outed" what really happened, but this isn't the first time I've seen him have a special moment to just rant and pour out his feelings.

Not everyone has to do a poverty porn show, and exploit the circumstances of the uneducated, poor. So to even compare what he does to what they do in their own way ,is so idiotic. I can only shake my head with this whole fiasco.

It came in under 30 minutes -- any more than that and it's free. Great! Oily, greasy, cheesy, savory and tasty. Mainam na pampabata.

Gubat sa Ciudad Resort Opens Wave Pool

We found ourselves in Gubat sa Ciudad Pool Resort in Novaliches for a night swim after a crazy day with a bunch of my lunatic friends.

Back story: This particular Saturday was really magastos. There was talk about not spending too much. Tell me about being kuripot and I'm on top of the list. Being a mommy makes one super budget conscious. Since we've spent much on Banapple and going around already, I don't know what possessed the gang that after eating out they were suddenly wanting to drink booze while swimming. I think in the span of three hours, we spent P1000 on transportation alone. We rode a taxi from Morato to Pasig and Pasig to Fairview and back.

The earning people were itching to spend cash. I think this is what stress does to working people. You overwork, get sick, burn out to earn money. Then you end up spending lavishly the money you work so hard for just to de-stress. Hehehe.

Nobody wanted to go out of town, so the unanimous choice was to find a pool resort closer to home. We had several resorts in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan in mind. Circumstances stopped us from actually swimming in SJDM. Someone suggested Villa Celedonia in Novaliches. Eventhough cheap, they're open until 4am only. And we got there at 12 midnight so 4 hours wasn't appealing at all. So Gubat sa Ciudad it was.

A huge announcement by the gate says it's latest attraction, the wave pool, is still for turnover and is limited to the use of the owners and friends. No one of us asked if it's already operational.

Presenting the wave pool... trust me when I say it's long.

Update: OMG I just found this vid. Scary! Scary ang bacteria ng mga taong nagsisiksikan sa wave pool. Hahaha.

It's great that GSC is constantly working on improvements. For a time, the resort got obscure because people flocked to the newer resorts in the area. When we arrived they were constructing this mega covered court.

The old gazebos and open cottages are usable and for rent.

There were mangoes on the premises. Just to make you salivate because it's hands-off.

Even a playground for tots. For kids who are afraid of the water or parents afraid that their kids might drown. (Seriously, drowning is the second highest reason for children's deaths.) How thoughtful.

Endless open benches. There are a lot of these all over the place.

The great thing about this resort is its vast, huge forest-themed park. Rest assured you will not literally bump into another human being as you go around. They also have up to 8 or 9 pools which assures there's no overcrowding.

If I were a kid, this mini bahay kubo would be an ultimate playground. I want to buy one for the kids. :)

You might wonder how much Banapple pays me that I constantly whine about how I love their food and broadcast about me wanting something from Banapple and dragging friends my friends along. No, I don't get paid by Banapple or get free stuff. I think what got me hooked is the feeling that someone cooked for me, that the cook gets what kind I like, cooked it like how I like it. It gets a little boring and tiring to eat stuff that I cook, eating out is somewhat a relief.

Kids Love Water

Kids love water and playing with water. It's almost like there's a sign that says, "Hey! Play with me!" be it rain, the sea, or canal water. My kids love anything water. Water guns, water creatures, ponds, water balls, you name it. Especially when it's the sea and their faces light up like it's the most awesome thing ever.

It's summer time and I have yet to take the kids to the beach. I readied everything, my gear has gone ahead of me to Bicol a week ago, waiting to be used. I bought a super special SPF 80 sunblock by Banana Boat. There was one from Beach Hut which reads "SPF 100+ As seen on Cosmo". Seriously, what is SPF 100+, a raincoat? I also have Belo Sunblock SPF 60 for myself. Belo is okay, it works.

I miss Baby Marco. He loved water even when he was just a teeny blob-by infant.

Fountains are a constant thing of fascination for my kids. I cannot find it but I'm pretty sure I have a photo deep in the abyss of my files playing at the Market! Market! fountain grounds. It was fun seeing them have a grand time, but I can't help but panic at my icky fountain water-soaked children getting the colds. It's not easy taking care of sick children.

Chatime Pioneer Center Opens!

If there's one thing I love more than my husband, it's milk tea. As opposed to soda and other high-calorie drinks, tea has endless health benefits and a classic taste enjoyed whether cold or hot. (Though it's a different case with bubble teas.) Imagine my joy when Chatime opened in our neighborhood, finally, a milk tea place! With over 415 branches worldwide, it's only a matter of time before they proliferate on Philippine shores. Actually, I've come to realize that if ever I do relocate to the provinces, it will be hard to get my milk tea fix! I would have to travel all the way to Manila??? Duh. The matter's settled then. Hahaha!

Miguel and I checked it out in one of our grocery trips to Pioneer Center. Parking is FREE and not a problem, so this is so going to be very attractive to those who want a relaxing, comfy place to chill out with a date, meetup with friends or work on your laptops. They have free wi-fi.

Update: I got a message from Chatime's Facebook Page that they have a Buy 1 Get 1 Free Promo between 12-2pm on their official opening tomorrow, April 9 until Friday! Great lunch idea, I say!

The shop is still on its soft opening, and the sibling-owners are still manning the counters, training staff and I found it nice that they were courteously greeting customers. It's a plus for me, because I don't go back to shops and restos who have grumpy owners. :-D A lot of Mandarin was going on, I assume they're Taiwanese trainors?

The cozy interiors encourage you to stay a while and literally take a break from everyday stresses. Lol. I know I can be over-dramatic at times. I loved the ginormous ultra-soft white sofas. I just don't know how the chicness will handle young kids (like the one I brought along. Pictured below, I stopped Miggy from standing on the spanking new couch because the table was too high for kids.)

This famous Taiwanese pop milk tea chain boasts of a wide selection of milk tea variations. So wide it took me some time to order but told myself that I will figure out the other drinks later and just try the basic pearl milk tea. I cannot base judgment on one drink alone, so I will reserve judgment on future visits.

You can customize your toppings to your liking and choose your sugar and ice options. Prices are reasonable, as most drinks are below P100. They pay attention to the consistency and taste of the tea they use, as well as the toppings being just right. This is the second Chatime branch to open, the first is at Banawe Avenue, Quezon City. They have another one opening up at Landmark Makati Bridgeway.

They look like little bundles of fat with pink cheeks and blue eyes, and I love ALL babies for that matter but Caucasian ones... they're just so flippin' cute! Twins = 2x the cuteness!

Living in the City Vs. Province

I have been romanticizing the idea of buying property in the province. I think there is beauty in simplicity in living in the provinces. It's like the most ideal destination to raise children, where there is no pollution, where the mountains and fields are their playground, there are rivers and springs everywhere, the beaches are white and a ride away, and food is fresh, healthy and cheap. Getting an education is also cheap.

I think I am an old lady inside -- I like the countryside very much.

Since I became a mom, I just want my kids to have the same experiences I enjoyed as a child. I want them to grow up with recollections of how they spent their days just running around, bringing home junk, spiders, being dirty and climbing trees. Here in Manila, they spend their days confined in the house, in front of a boxful of toys, watching Cartoon Network. We can't let them go out of the house, too many cars. The only physical activity they have is whenever we go out to the mall and play in one of those playpens you pay. (Which pretty much sums up the physical activites we, as parents, are limited too, as well) And each trip to the mall costs a substantial amount of money. Our P500 isn't what like it used to be. And when we do go out, I feel like people are crawling all over each other. Plus everywhere takes 1 hour to wait for a taxi and commute (to think I already live in Ortigas.)

This was taken in our old condo -- instead of vast, green spaces, you take a baby on a walk in a small patch of vacant space beside the parking lot. Pitiful.

So what if they turn "promdi." Promdi is good. You identify with a hometown and a community.

At the same time, I wanted to take on as a challenge to my personal beliefs that I am too Manila-centric. I think it also goes to say that Filipinos are also too regionalistic. In the book, "The History of the Filipino People" by Teodoro Agoncillo, it is said that we identify strongly with where we came from. If you were Ilonggo, for example, you will feel easily feel affinity for a fellow Ilonggo even if you've just met. Or you vouch for a certain senatorial candidate since he's Bicolano when you hardly know about his capabilities as a public servant. I have friends from college who were from different provinces, and it's amazing to see how they feel their hometowns are what they really are-- home. I want to see where all this affinity is coming from.

Even foreigners who choose to live in the Philippines choose Cebu, Baguio, Davao and some actually prefer the rural parts. From what I learned from blogwalking several expat sites, the ~~loathe Manila lifestyle, traffic, pollution, terrible crime rate, noise, taxicabs, policemen, etc.~~ find the simple life appealing, and most of them came from first-world, developed countries like Japan, the US, UK, Germany and others.

I'll be a fool to think that the grass is greener on the other side. In the province, even if it's cheap, life is hard too for a lot of people, especially poor families with multiple kids. I bet that if ever we relocate, people will automatically perceive us to be well-off. In my 3-week stay in Sorsogon, 4 people have already come to the house to borrow money from us. I did lend money because they're relatives, and one of them promised to pay a 50-kilo sack of rice in exchange for 800. Imagine my surprise when I heard that neighbors buzz about how often I go to the city and always come home with armfulls of grocery bags. The truth is, we have a large household and when arrived, supplies are depleted as it is so I shopped for them. Neighbors took that as a sign that we are "loaded" or something and that maybe we can borrow money. I have since limited my trips and made sure I went unnoticeable.

If I am to only consider the welfare of the kids, it would be an outright yes. I am ever so convinced that it's the best place to be. It's all in favor of the children. However, their daddy will remain in the city and be all alone in our apartment. He says he'll manage, and he'll go to us every so often, though I hardly believe that he'll be alright. I want them to be close as can be, especially at this crucial developmental stage.

I am still unsure whether I can let go of the exciting things that happen here. Though most town centers in the provinces now has comforts I'm accustomed to. I bet I will still miss the clubs and the bars and my friends.My family is also here, and they live 45 minutes away.

Maybe my decision can wait a year.

A Post-Birthday Post

I apologize for not updating soonest! I wanted, wanted, wanted to make a birthday post to commemorate my silver but was unsuccessful because I got so busy celebrating it! I didn't really want to celebrate but gave in because everyone wanted to use my birthday as an excuse to eat and drink, hahaha!

First off, I got bored, bored, bored with my broom-straight hair. I skipped by a salon for a quick haircut and the hairdresser gave me "The Octopus" -- inverted triangle-type of hairstyle with a thick bob at the top and thin layering done from midsection down. Oh well, hair grows.

I missed my folks so I called them to tell I'm coming over, they had lunch set, prepared a lot of grilled, roasted and broiled stuff plus provincial delicacies I have come to love. I have cousins from Capiz who came over. RC Cola pairs best, because it's the cheapest!

Then I was surprised to see my dear friend Benito, who used to be Marky, now Anthony, at the same Pizza Hut doing overtime signing some clients for his new banking company. So off we went to The Lanche House. My friend, Nica's, family is very close to me and my hubby.

Here's the special guest, his name is Kalbo. And bumped into another close friend who I've last seen eons ago, Jed.

And the order of business is to drink and be merry. We concluded Timog it is for tonight. It's a breather because it's always Ortigas, Manda and Makati for us. We wanted to go to Agave but our resident big sis, Ate Rhiza, suggested Off-the-Grill as the place to be. Her favorite 24/7 is on during Fridays. We didn't regret it, because they were truly good! RnB night is pure love. We still had our margaritas (pictured below, Php230), blowjobs, kamikazees and vodka sprites along with other chow.

Thank you for making my 25th truly special! It's almost a moving-up birthday for me, for a lot of things. I know I'm missing some people here and honestly I'm surprised myself, I didn't plan any celebration at all. ~~I hope and pray to God that~~ I still have more birthdays and more celebrations coming up!

Almost every birthday of mine coincides with a summer outing, and I received so much birthday greetings. It's hard to answer to all 200+ of them, so THANK YOU! from the bottom of my crazy heart.

Lastly, to my dear honey, sweetie-bun, babe, love, mahal, thanks for somehow organizing this little party and wanting me to have a good time on my birthday. Love you.

They say that I have a favorite son. And that son is Miguel. You see, of my three sons, Miguel is probably the most mischievous, the most expressive, sensitive, easily agitated and the trouble maker. He starts all the fights in the house with his Kuya and absolutely, definitely hates Matt. He has the temperament of the grumpy giant in Jack and the Beanstalk trapped inside his little body. We never had this problem with his Kuya so we needed to have a different approach with Miguel. As far as I can remember, the infant Marco was the best convenient baby to have ever, he was just all smiles, rarely cries, always pleasant, sweet and well-behaved. It was always smooth and easy. With Miguel, he throws a tantrum whenever and regardless of where we are. I know I shouldn't be labeling him or associating him with negative behavior but that's our experience so far. Each of my boys are different from one another. Yet Miguel is the sweetest, most generous loving little boy I have ever met.

Me and E make sure we reserve a special time with our middle child, just creating memories of him and us without his brothers. We do the same for Marco and Matt. It's important to make each feel loved and secure and trusting. Moments like these are extra special because it's for them and them alone to cherish someday. This time, for Miguel, is lunch at Max's since I was craving for kare-kare and he likes sitaw.

I'm approaching my 25th birthday and it's at this time of the year that I get a little dramatic. :)

Barrio Sayawan

Nightlife in cosmopolitan Manila takes many forms. A lot of establishments now cater to different niches. The young, hip crowd fills dance clubs. The "salary men" may choose to go to KTVs or drinking pubs. The yuppie crowd are found in bars, grills, or videoke rooms. Lesbians and gays have clubs reputedly especially for them. The emo, emo-rock, rock, also have alternative clubs where they perform and jam. Teenagers can go to some Korean boyband concert. The choices are endless. Needless to say, these forms of entertainment would usually entail a substantial amount of money to allow passage or to make the most out of the "gimik."

In the barrios, it is a different story. There are no malls, no strips of establishments. Everybody is asleep right after dinner. But restless young souls yearn to go out, and have fun, be entertained in one form of another.

For a measly entrance fee (P20 for boys and the girls get in for free), a mobile sounds and lights service, a basketball court and some willing barangay officials, the young crowd gets to enjoy a once-a-week social event that gets them together with one another. If you muster enough face, maybe you can get lucky and get your crush to agree to dance.

I think the Filipino is practical that way, whatever setting, restrictions, limitations, we will always find a way to socialize with one another. This feeling that we have to commune with people is just too hard to ignore. You can find barrio dances like this anywhere in the Philippines.

There is no dresscode, come as you are, or maybe dress up a bit. And come in tsinelas. This is as "toogs toogs" as it can get. I tell you the music selection is... painful. A lot of the songs are painfully old. Think Eminem's Without Me. But I did hear more recent ones like Africa and Tu Vuo Fa Americano. Then some "head bang" song, after that, a love song or sweet music. Certainly confusing.

It's good, clean fun. Save for stabbing incidents and brawls, I think going to one is pretty manageable. I just find it boring because I don't know anybody. Some guys would approach, hello, may nagkakamali pa talaga. I just show them my wedding ring, some insist, I just leave.

Cagsawa Ruins, Albay

Here we are at the iconic Cagsawa Ruins in Albay. Luckily, my bros-in-law are free to take me and the kids around. Awe-inspiring. Panoramic. The majestic Mt. Mayon stands high and mighty against the bell tower, the only prominant part of the church that remains. The looming volcano is almost like a ghostly reminder of what happened to the church and Albay when it erupted in 1814. It is said that buried under the ruins are people who sought refuge during the eruption, when there was nowhere else to go. Along with the buried church are people, artifacts, treasure and some said, gold.

The Spanish had an early church here in 1587 but was burned by the Dutch in 1636, when they ransacked the towns boardering Legazpi Bay. So this second installation was built in 1724. Not meant to be.

Mayon is partially covered by the thick clouds, but it's still beautiful and it's so big it's scary! I can almost imagine what will happen when this erupts.

Cold Springs at La Union, Castilla, Sorsogon

Sorsogon is home to a lot of natural cold and hot springs amidst lush forests and mountains. In Brgy. La Union, they have an all-natural pool of cold spring water that is so fresh, so abundant and so cool! I haven't enjoyed overflowing, abundant clean, fresh water in a long time. They swear it's clean because it's "mineral water." I am quite OC with water but since I had no choice, took the plunge and drank from the gushing tubes like amoeba doesn't exist in this world. Everybody seemed fine, a little bacteria won't hurt, I guess.

"Tawas"

Miguel had fever on-off for three days, which I initially thought was just because of his congested nose because of the cold, cold weather in Sorsogon. Seriously cold. As cold as Baguio that I literally cannot sleep and when I do, I wake up several times in the middle of the night. On the fourth day, Miguel was covered with rashes all over the torso, arms, back, face and neck. I thought it was dengue but dismissed it was only Roseola or "Tigdas Hangin." He's had this before, and I remember that episode very clearly. He was only 6 months old when he first had it.

I brought my him to Daraga for a check-up but all three clinics did not have a pediatrician. There was an ongoing pediatricians' conference, and as expected, all pedias were supposedly there. I wasn't as troubled cos I know that Miguel's almost going to get well. The rashes have dried up a bit and was turning scaly, he still had low fever, and that was what I was kinda worried about. But my mother-in-law would have none of it. Before I knew it, Manang was already in our living room and ready to do the "tawas" on Miggy. This is so witchcraft-y and voodoo-ey but just for the sake of not arguing, and her peace of mind, I gave in.

First, Manang drew crosses on the plate using oil.

Then, she scanned Miguel's body with the plate while muttering some prayer that only she can hear nor understand.

Miguel kept squirming and pulling away, which they said was because the "nuno" was angry or disturbed and agitating the kid. Any kid would be fussy when sick, whatchuthink?

Manang said that if the crosses that she drew formed an awkward shape, maybe like a person (same as the lower leftside cross) or an animal, the "nuno" is still there. I just rolled my eyes, what are the chances of oil blotting and not form patterns? The process was repeated over and over until no more "tao" figures appeared on the blackened plate.

Well, he did get better after the tawas. Though I doubt it's related to that. I'll leave them to their beliefs that the "tawas" actually worked. It was pretty entertaining, anyway. :-p

Swingin'

Bought this nice, sturdy military hammock for the kids to play with at the Daraga public market. I got this for P350, which is pretty reasonable to keep the kids' afternoons occupied enough and not wander too far from home. I plan to build a couple of more swings as a mini-playground for the kids. Ah, the joys of play.

My darling baby, Mattie. I so miss!

Langka is in abundance. So much that nobody takes notice of them anymore, they just fall on the ground and rot. Here, I asked the kids to roll the fallen langka a little further from the swing.

Happy little rabbits. :) I want them to enjoy moments like this, doing nothing, just enjoying their toddlerhood, running about in the great outdoors. The air is so clean, unlike super polluted Manila. I love it when I see them dirty, with dirt on their hands, running after chicks, dogs, cats, looking at pigs, carabaos, cows. I know they get something out of the junk they bring home-- stones, coke caps, flowers. This extended vacation in Bicol is really for them, so they can be kids. Plus the food is great, fresh and cheap. My kids love seafood, they hate meat because it's tough to chew. Here, they can do whatever they want without worrying about breaking stuff or getting hit by cars. Thank God for vacations.

My Heart Bleeds for Japan

Words cannot describe how I feel about what happened in Japan. After Ondoy, I'm crazy paranoid about floods. Pasig was hit heavily and a lot of people lost their lives, houses, livelihoods.. memories. Feelings of alarm, panic, worry and helplessness were overwhelming. One is totally powerless, the rich and poor are equal in the face of calamity.

Having kids myself, especially children and elderly who would otherwise take a miracle to survive such disasters. I cannot help but think of those who were trapped, swept away or were simply taken by surprise of the powerful gush of ocean that wiped out houses, vehicles, buildings. The wave took the lives of thousands and took them to heaven all in one clean sweep.

It is humbling to realize our weakness against catastrophic events, how our existence, the world that we have led to believe only survives on fortune, or glory, or maybe for some, fame-- can be swept away in just a matter of minutes. And everything will be gone. All our petty quarrels, indifferences, feelings of self-importance, arrogance and selfish desires, material or psychological, mean so little when our time finally comes. We leave everything behind. All that is left is faith.

Just Always Pray At Night.

How Do You Feel About Credit Cards?

I know the many conveniences of having a credit card brings, yet we're still apprehensive to get one. The cashless concept is a change I have not fully embraced, well at least not yet. Since I was small, I have learned to scrimp and save on money that is tangible-- real, discernible, touchable material. Money that goes out is easily felt. Don't you almost feel sad when you let go of money when you purchase something, even necessities like groceries, bills, pay for a movie? Spending isn't as easy as actually earning the money, right?

With credit cards, money becomes imaginary. You now envision you still have this money. A vision that blurs when you're in front of a really nice pair of shoes or bag or maybe clothing. Let's say, it really fits you perfectly. You know you don't across RTW that fits you so well, you feel like you found Atlantis. So you buy out of the blue thinking you can pay it off even on the next next payday and will just accept whatever fee they charge if you can't afford to pay off everything this cut-off.

It's like you are bordering on tipping beyond the balance of your last payday and your current expenses. And pray that your information never be compromised, no store will overcharge you that you have to go through the whole process of filing a refund, no calamity will prevent you from using your cards.

It is true that it is now a vital need. Such cards exist for business convenience, of having a formal statement of accountabilities. Or for the "loaded" ones who have so much cash that credit cards are simply a matter of convenience.

But for the working class, it is a constant reminder of bills to pay, maxing out on purchases, deals you agreed upon that you don't really need anyway, gadgets you bought in installment, cash advances, and so forth. It is forever tied up to the words "interest rates," "balance," "fees," "unnecessary spending," etc. Money will feel vague, elusive, like you have to chase after it--- each time you make that swipe.

Since I haven't come about to building an asset empire large enough to cover any debt of any kind, we have desisted of getting one. And I know myself too well that if I succumb to my shopping urges, I will be my own slave, working like a carabao just to pay for whimsical purchases.

But here I am, lamenting that I don't have a credit card, because I want bigger storage on my Google Picasa albums. And I never book a plane ticket under my name because we don't have a card.

A Little Project (Cont'd)

Don't you remember when you were little, you used to just love, love playing with sand? When I was a kid, all my playmates would go crazy over a mountainload of sand and gravel whenever there's house construction in the neighborhood.

I get senti watching my kids play with their little titos and titas, so I allowed them and left the scolding to the old people.

Can you tell from the carpenter's size how big this bathroom is? You can fit a party in here.

Here's how it looks like when I left. I bought about 110 piece of 40x40 large tiles in light blue for the walling, and dark blue for the flooring. I have yet to see how this turns out. More on the next post!

A Little Project

I have just come back from a three-week trip to Bicol. I tugged along my youngest, Matt, on a long journey to reach the town of Castilla in Sorsogon. I have since served as photographer to a local JS prom, went to some "sayawan" on weekends where all the young town folk gather to see some chics, went swimming numerous times to a nearby natural cold spring pool, had a fun day at Cagsua ruins, and made many trips to Legazpi, Daraga and Sorsogon cities on chores. I have yet to go to Donsol for sighting whale sharks and Matnog for some white-sand island hopping. I'll reserve that for another post.

I have an ongoing project (and hopefully, only until today because I want the hardware bills to stop, seriously) on my husband E's house, we're adding a new bathroom to the house. And I made sure it's gigantuar. Scrimping on space made little sense in the province, and I know a lot about that living in the city.

The house is proudly a product of husband sweat and tears from a loan from his previous employer. It is still unfinished, just the bare to house the family. It is modestly sized, with a nice, spacious living room great for kids. Someday, this will be cement-finished, will be sparkling with new paint, an extended dining area at the back, extra rooms and a nice, big balcony.

Okay, I might as well show you how it's made.

After fixing markers on where and how the bathroom should look like, I had a local tambay dig a hole for us for P700. First we dig a hole. It was about 10-12 feet high.

Yup, this is where all the yucky, gross things go. Things we don't want to see or smell. Hahaha.
Then, support is installed along its sides to make sure the soil doesn't cave in. Hollow blocks and iron rods were put in place and left to dry. Afterwards, bamboo shoots and plywood were placed to hold support for the cement finish on top of the septic tank. And voila!

Sorsogon Baywalk

After the tsunami scare that hit the shores of Sorsogon, and the tragedy that befell Japan, I realized that there is no better place for my kids to be than with us. We have thought many times about sending the children to school in Legazpi City in Albay because of cheaper yet quality education in E's old school, St. Agnes Academy. With all the global occurrences these past months, I have since changed my mind. I need to look around soon. Marco's soon to be in Kindergarten and Miggy might as well attend nursery since he's gonna be lonely at home without his kuya. Since I was going back to Manila the next day to attend to some business, I brought the kids with me to the city and made a quick trip to the baywalk. It was chilly and dusky, the wind was strong and the waters were brisk. Regardless of whatever the sea looks, my children are always, always happy to see some water.

Miggy is not feeling well but put up a happy face, he's been complaining that he's "pilay." And Marco didn't take the cool wind too well, he ran a fever when we came home, along with a running nose.

An Early Birthday Present

From Farm to Fridge -- Is Going Vegan the Solution?

In the last century, we have seen the exponential demand for food sources in answer to a dramatic population explosion. This paved the way to commercial farming by large-scale and multinational companies. I have read somewhere that meat used to be an expensive, once-in-a-while luxury. It is not an everyday fare like how it is now. Today, it's almost an indispensable commodity. As market demand grew, there came the need to discover more consistent and advanced methods of mass-producing animal products. Farm animals are given steroids, antibiotics and food designed to enhance their body mass to more than nature has designed them for. Some are genetically modified from birth, as they are engineered to simply become "products." As a result, most of the chemicals are passed on to humans who eat them, hence diseases like cancers, skin diseases, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, etc. Which raises the question, is banning meat the right thing to do? Like what this video suggests, "you may want to explore a vegan diet."

We wanted to grow Mateo's hair, but due to a bacterial infection, pedia ordered a full skinhead 'do for the little tyke. We went to that kiddie salon in Robinson's Galleria which specializes in kiddie haircuts where cartoons played while all the snipping and snapping is done. Unfortunately, there were 5 kids on queue so we decided to find another salon.

We ended up at GQ Barbershop at the Shangri La Plaza Mall. I know for a fact that barbershops make the best skinheads. :D
